Rice Lake Canoe Co. tags

Paul Miller

Canoe Nut
I'm taking a survey to find if there are any others out there in need of Rice Lake Canoe Co. tags. The ones that say The Herald Canoe.

Picture attached.

I can get these stamped as original at a cost of about $7.00 each but need to purchase 100. Of course if you need them for a canoe you may need as many as 8.

Please reply to the post or send me a private message.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

The tags in your picture were only used between 1920 and 1926, when the company was located in Cobourg. Is it that model you are getting stamped?

Hi Dick,

I'm not sure which ones I should use.

The canoe is a 16' with a round inside stem like most I've seen. It does have the number 577 stamped in the stem

The plank and rib top show between the deck and the gunnel.

I have attached a few pics of what might be important, although I don't know if they changed any building methods after they left Rice Lake.

Hopefully you can help. I can have the tags made how ever they need to be made.

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Dick,

I was checking and do have a damaged tag that came off the canoe and it does read Cobourg Ont. Can.

Any body out there need any those tags???

Thanks,

Paul

P.S. Dick, I would assume the early tags read Rice Lake, Ont. Can. Correct??

Hi Paul,

There are at least eight different metal tags for the Rice Lake Canoe Co.

Two versions of an oval with the following text;
Herald Bros.
Canoe Builders
Gores Landing, Ont, Canada

Rectangular with round corners or an oval with the following text;
Rice Lake Canoe Co.
Builders
Gore's Landing, Ont.
Canada

Rectangular with rounded corners as well as an oval with the following text;
Rice Lake Canoe Co.
Gore's Landing, Ont.
Canada

Oval with the following text;
The
Rice Lake Canoe Co
Herald Bros. Props.
Gore's Landing, Ont.
Canada

And the one you showed in the above pictures.

Thanks Dick,

I had no idea there were so many.

No wonder you don't put much credence in a tag if they are about the same size and can be moved around.

I've seen the Herald Bros, Canoe Builders, Gore's Landing Ont. Canada, pic attached but that was a combing tag.

Were any of the others Thwart tags? or were they all combing or deck tags?

Thanks,

Paul

Got another tag example for you from after 1926 when the company was renamed Rice Lake Boat Works, and moved back to Gore's landing.
