The Old Town canoe with serial number 185685 is a 34 foot long war canoe model with a keel and sponsons. It was built between December, 1970 and January, 1971. The original exterior was unpainted. It shipped on March 31st, 1971 to Kings Mills, Ohio. A scan showing this build record can be found below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe, although that seems unlikely in this case. There were six on that truck load and I believe this was the complete order at that time. Only three have shown up in the database research described at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ which is too small a sample size for an accurate estimate. However, the approach used for the other estimates at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/models.html yields a guess of about 51 between 1906 and 1927 which is an average of around two per year. There are several known to have been built after 1927 including these six and another group that went to Disney but that isn't likely to change an estimate like this by much.
