Old Town Serial...part unclear

A local man is selling his Old Town canoe that he says is from ~1918 or so. Serial number he sent to me is 67296, followed by a letter that he says could be C, E or F, followed by a 7. Does this make sense, or could the letter also be a number?

If it does make sense, any information on her would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott WW

Welcome, my guess is that this is the Old Town canoe with serial number 67296 and the " C, E or F" is actually a numeric "1" digit. This is a 17 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, twenty inch birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between October, 1921 and January, 1922. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on February 2nd, 1922 to Chicago, Illinois. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck,

Benson

Awesome - thank you so much. If i go through with this, I may have to restore it to its original dark green from the white it is now!

And I did just join the WCHA...thank you again.
