Old Town Canoe Serial number

Blue Viking

Wooden Canoe Maniac
Have an 18' OT Sq. stern canoe. the serial # I think is 592349-18. Would like history. Also an 18' guide serial #126353. If you could provide info. and History it would be greatly appreciated

Blue Viking,

Double check #592349-18 with both stems or rubbed numbers, paint, varnish, etc. Either the number is wrong or it is beyond our database of serial numbers which go out to the 220,000's. Photo's would be good if you can post them to help with the identification. I also checked 59234 which is a 17' HW and 92349, also a 17' HW...no help there.

OT #126353 is an 18' Guide finished in "Guide Special" and shipped on May 1, 1939 to Maine. It was built with cedar planking, spruce gunwales and ash seats, thwarts & decks. Optional items included were half ribs and keel...the original color was Guide Special Green. Build record attached.

If not already a member, please consider joining the WCHA to help support these services which were brought about by grants and volunteer time. The WCHA is your best source for information, help and restoration tips...let us know on the square stern canoe.

Regards,

Ric Altfather

Thanks for the information on the 1939 OT. The other canoe is a Square Stern model. It is 18' long, 45" wide between outwales, 13" deep at the center. It has red cedar planking, white ribs, spruce inwales, outwales, and the deck is also dpruce I believe. The seats are also spruce. the keel is probably ash. Its shape is the following description: conventional canoe bow, moderate sweep down the side to 13" depth, and an upsweep to the transom. This canoe was owned by a guide in the allagash. Do not knopw where that was its original home or not. The person I bougfht it from said it was made in 1919. I just dont know anymore. Someone told me that Sq. sterns were built by OT starting in 1922, and if this is the case then that rules out the 1919 yr. going to give you another #59234. Cannot getr to stem yet due to cold weather. Boat is covered and is safe. Thanks.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 59234 is a 17 foot long, CS grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with Western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, and sponsons. It was built between February and October, 1920. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on October 27th, 1920 to Philadelphia, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

Various square ended canoe models were listed in the catalogs between 1917 and 1971 and one was on the cover in 1925 as shown at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/covers/large-25.gif on the web. They introduced an 18 foot long square ended paddling canoe in 1929 that was originally 40 inches wide and 14 inches deep. This later grew to be 42 inches wide in 1948 and was last listed in the 1971 catalog.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson
