The Old Town canoe with serial number 53257 was a 17 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with open spruce gunwales, 20 inch maple decks, maple trim, a keel, and outside stems. It was built between February and May, 1919. The original exterior paint color was Yale blue. It shipped on May 14th, 1919 to Ware, Massachusetts.

A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below. This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. Additional information about the project to preserve this information is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

This canoe is currently up for auction at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=23800&item=7134449961&rd=1 and the owner described some extensive repairs on the phone today.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the auction,

    Benson
