Old Time #23321 history/info?

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 23321 is an 16 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, Otca model with red Western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, twenty inch birch decks, birch thwarts, birch seats, and a keel. It was built between July, 1912 and February, 1913. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It is shown as being shipped to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania on December 7th, 1912 but there is probably a typographical error in the last digit of the year. A scan showing this build record is attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,

Thanks for the prompt response. Your help is truly appreciated along with all the info on WCHA! Its neat that build records are still available and having that info makes restoring the canoe a bit more exciting. I can only account for the canoe's last 50 years. Its in pretty rough shape as of today. It belonged to my grandfather, my dad and now me. I have no idea where grandpa bought it or when. I know personally that the canoe glides through the water effortlessly since as a kid I paddled it around a few times. Anyway, now comes the hardest part - deciding to restore it myself (inexperienced wrt canoe restoration) or have someone more experienced restore it. I'll take some time to access the canoes condition, read a few of the books mentioned here on WCHA and then make a choice. Again thanks for the info. Serial No. pictured below. On the other side of the canoe is stenciled the "16" for the length (picture not shown).
