Ogilvy V-Stern

    I'm working on a 20' Chestnut Ogilvy I picked up this past fall, trying to re-finish the interior and take the hull back to canvas from fiberglass. I'm stuck trying to figure out the best way and place to seal the canvas around the transom. Where my transom is in two pieces, is it easier to seal the canvas around the inner part of the transom plate at the end of the planking and then just squash the canvas (once tacked down) with the outer transom plate?

    The previous owner also added some height to the transom (about 2") and I'm wondering if its worth keeping that modification or taking it back to original dimensions?

    I re-did a Canadian Canoe Co. Y-stern a number of years ago. It also had a 2-part transom. The inner, structural transom had a shallow rabbet around the edge that the canvas was wrapped into and stapled. I then made a covering piece (in this case out of mahogany) about 3/8" I think, bedded, screwed and bunged it as a finish piece over the structural transom.

    Regarding the elevated transom on your boat; I imagine the previous owner did that to raise the motor. With the canoe loaded up and even with a short shaft, the prop may have been pretty deep when running. A potential issue, especially if the boat was used on shallow rivers which many of the Ogilvies were.
