Looking for info on Old Town Wahoo #180344

Hi, I just purchased an Old Town Wahoo fiberglass sailing canoe with full Old Town lateen sailing rig. This one has leeboards (I think dagger boards were an option on this model) and an aluminum auto bailer through the floor near the rear seat. Serial number is 180344. Looks like it was made about 1970. What do the Old Town records say about this one? Thanks, bljohns, La Crosse, WI

Unfortunately the build record scans skip over 180344. Based on the canoes on either side (180343 and 180345) the hull was built on March 20, 1968 and finished around April 3rd of that year. 180345 is a Wahoo as well and weighed in at 85 lbs. when finished. I'll look further to see if I can find the record.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 180344 is a 16 foot long Wahoo model with a lateen sailing rig, white decks and a red hull. It was built in March, 1968 and shipped on May 22nd, 1968 to Chicago, Ill. The back side of the record indicates that there was a scratch on the side and end. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

Some of the double sided records were scanned separately and just added to the end of the sequence so the scans for this one are numbers OT30076A and OT30076B. These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

The early versions of the Wahoo had leeboards that clamped on like the wooden canoes and the later ones had slots built into the hull for dagger boards. The auto bailer was probably not installed at the factory since it isn't mentioned on the build record. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
