I have a 17-foot canoe, a "Kineo Special" from Kennebec Boat and Canoe, serial number 2808. Can anyone tell me when it was made and anything more about it? Thank you!

The Kennebec "Kineo Special" canoe with number 2808 is shown on pages 246 and 247 of volume four in the Kennebec ledgers as serial number 102808. This was assigned to 17 foot long Kineo Special Model. It was planked by Pooler on June 21st, 1930. The second filler coat was applied by Leonard on September 6th, 1930. It was railed by Thompson on October 18th, 1930. The "F 22" (Function number 22 or the keel?) was completed on November 6th, 1930(?) by Thib.(?). The "F 24" (Function number 23 or the rails?), "F 25" (Function number 25 or the seats?), and "F 28" (Function number 28 or painting?) were all completed by Leonard on April 25th, 1931. The original color was green. It was packed by Lenteigne(?) on April 25th, 1931 and shipped on May 12th, 1931 to location "31-205". This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it.

The scans of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CDs available from http://www.wcha.org/catalog/ and http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
