Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have just recently got a kenneebec square stern boat that needs some major restoration. I am new at this but have a real love wooden boats. Can some help point me in the direction and possible give some pointers. The boat had the a tag with Kennebec Canoe Co. serial number 30347.Thanks in advance. I live in Winthrop, Maine. Jim

The Kennebec canoe with serial number 30347 is an 15.5 foot, Joy Boy square end model with sponsons. It was planked by Roy on March 28th, 1927. The sponsons were attached by Sheehan on April 2nd. Roy then covered and first filled it on the same day. Roy applied the second filler coat on April 16th. The rest of the line is blank so it is not clear how it was finished, where it was shipped, or anything else. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum so I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. More information about the Joy Boy and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks for that infomation!!!!!!!! This is a great resource and I will be glade to contribute in anyway. Thanks....... Jim

FYI, only 855 Joy Boys were built, almost all of them in 1926 and 1927. No idea how many survive, but it is certainly not a common boat at all.

Cheers,
Dan
