Good afternoon, I grew up using and sailing my dad's 18' Old Town canoe and now I'm starting the first recanvasing project on my grandfather's matching canoe so I can enjoy it with my own two kids. I'm pretty sure it's a 1965 model but I wanted to confirm that and find out anything more you may be able to add about it. The serial number is 173954 18

Thank you!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 173954 is an 18 foot long Otca model with a keel and narrow two and 3/4 inch planking. It was built between May and September, 1964. The original exterior paint color was red. It shipped on September 15th, 1964 to Fairport Harbor, Ohio. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
