1911 closed gunwale Old Town Charles River

Michigan Canoe Nut
I fell in love with this closed gunwale CR, very finely shaped thwarts and finer seats. Has original rail caps(hurray) and inwales(hurray again) but looks to need outer caps, can't have everything right? The tips are rotted as usual but the funny thing is they were covered in resin impregnented porch screen! That's a new one on me! Bought it of the original family. The gent I bought it from used it and before that his uncle had it just before WW II. His uncle was a tail gunner in a bomber and was shot down killing everyone onboard. Before that, his grandfather was the original owner. Neat canoe, neat history as many others do.

Lovely little woodworking details on this boat! Glad you have it. The seller must have known you appreciated the history as well as the canoe itself.

Resurrecting this thread as today I have been given a 1911 OT closed gunwale Charles River. I need to go and collect but it will be an interesting project. It’s glassed so I will need to heat and get the glass off and then carry out some repairs as needed. It will be a repair and recanvas rather than a full restoration. We will see how it goes. The build sheet suggest it was light blue originally but I think I will incorporate the colour into one of the pattern paint schemes. I will blogg the repair progress.
