The Old Town record usbdrive that I have comes up blank when I try to research this number. It has the records for the boats on either side of the number but not this one. Is there any chance it can be found anywhere else? Or does this mean the boat in the shop does not really exist?

Some technical glitch seems like a more probable explanation than any more fundamental existentialist issue. I paddle therefore I am. The Old Town with serial number 173116 is a 16 foot long Double Ended Boat model with a keel, outside stems, and a floor rack. It was built between May and June, 1963. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped to East Holden, Maine on June 10th, 1963. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. Let me know if you would like a new copy of the build records to replace your set. I found this record at scan number 5451. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
