Wooden Canoe Maniac
Ok this was very hard to read, but looks like 72170 15 That's as close as I can get I think it's a 50 pounder. looks like a cs grade. has a keel. 15 footer one thwart. I'm thinking something from the 1920s diamond head bolts. any help would be great. also Green paint. Thanks, Dave

Can you attach some pictures of the numbers from each end or at least indicate which digit is the least clear? The Old Town with number 72170 is 18 feet long and 172170 is 16 feet. Thanks,

Benson

My guess is that you have the Old Town canoe with serial number 72176. This is a 15 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, two number one spruce paddles, and two L. P. (life preserver) cushions. It was built between July and August, 1922. The original exterior paint color was blue. It shipped on September 4th, 1922 to Milford, Penna. A scan showing this build record's information can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson

that's it, thanks Benson. Grey towers is thinking of displaying Gifford Pinchots canoe. they seem to want to display it the way it is green, broken ribs and planking. I was hoping to get the job of restoring it, but they may to choose to conserve it the way it is. Gifford Pinchot's estate Grey Towers is just 15 minutes from my house. If I get the job I'll let you know. Many thanks, Dave
