Curious about Wooden Canoes
This Canoe just came up on my local Craigslist, it looks like it could be a great first restoration project. There is little info available from the seller, it's been used as a theater prop. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

The Old Town canoe with serial number 109560 is an 18 foot long, AA (or top) grade, guide's model with red western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, no keel, and a floor rack. It was built between March and May, 1931. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on June 23rd, 1931 to Lake George, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the purchase and restoration,

Benson

From the pictures in the Craigs list ad, it appears to be covered with fiberglass, among other problems -- missing seat, thwarts, broken inwales, missing outwales, etc. Certainly restorable, but a good deal of work.
