Michigan Canoe Nut
Pulled the center board box outta the canoe, Man, bolted through everything, took the keel off, pulled nails, still wouldn't budge. Pulled the planking off, more screws!!! They didn't want this thing to move! Now to repair rot and cracks on it.

Rot and cracks? you should demand money back. They really couldnt build 'em in 1928 huh. No more sympathy for that leg now!!

Hello, what is that? I must have missed something. Did canoe makers put center board boxes in canoes? How often? Were they sucessful?

Why are you installing an officejet 8100 printer in it? seems like a good fit i agree, but i'd put the trunk back.:p:p

Yes, Old Town offered them in the 1920s. More information about these is available at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?3994 and the picture at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=22923&d=1347065452 shows one in the wind at the Assembly last year. A fiberglass variation as shown at http://wcha.org/pp-classifieds/showproduct.php?product=222&cat=16 was called the Wahoo. These are very successful on the water but very few were made so they were not overly successful in the market.

Amazing. If I decide to, I'll copy it. If no one has tried it, putting a lee board out under sail inevitably tears up the board through the scraping of the board with the bracket under pressure.

I have found that a large rubber gasket between the leeboard and the bracket helps to reduce this problem. The pictures at http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FEu81SK3u...AAFlM/KbA8AqkFAqM/s1600/IMG_0729CmprsCrop.jpg and below show them if you look closely. Adding a centerboard to a canoe is not a simple change so let us know how it goes. Thanks,

Benson

Chris - True, but realize that there's more to this than not wanting the trunk to move. They cut through all those ribs, so the attachment of their ends to the trunk is important for stabilizing that dramatically weakened part of the hull.

the trunk is important for stabilizing that dramatically weakened part of the hull.

The substantial shoe keel is also an integral part of reinforcing the Center Plate box. As Chris noted, he had to remove a significant number of bolts and screws to free the box. In this construction the box is also tied in at the top with a thwart.
