There are some really nice postcards from the Old Town Canoe Company in the
Old Town Postcard Gallery.
This really interesting collection of postcards was sent in by
Jess Buttery.
This wonderful postcard of a Micmac birchbark canoe was gift to Tim Hewitt from
Benson Gray. The "wigwam" in the background was part of a recreated Micmac village at
Rocky Point, on Prince Edward Island, Canada.
Northeast Carry, the famous portage between Moosehead Lake and the West Branch of the Penobscot
River in Maine. This carry was assisted for many, many years, first by indian "porters,"
then by horse-drawn wagons, and finally by motorized trucks. It is currently a labor of love again -
meaning you carry your belongings over by yourself, love.
This great postcard was originally printed by the Dean canoe company of Toronto. The front of the card reads,
"Souvenir of Dean's Canoe and Boat Exhibit - Canadian National Exhibition 1906 - Reginald Blomfield - Winner
of over 60 First Prizes in a 'Dean' Canoe - Compliments of Walter Dean, Toronto - Send for Catalogue."
The back reads, "'Deans' Canoes MUST paddle easy for they ALWAYS WIN." The logo reads, "Walter Dean -
Canoes & Boats - 1751 Queen St W - Toronto Canada"
What a neat postcard! This little gem is postmarked May 6, 1907, Decatur, ILL and is hand made from
leather! The card reads "You will hear a report from me soon. Love Ray." I can only imagine the
final report on this trip. What a find!
Although not exactly qualifying as a picture or a postcard, this Holiday card from December 1998,
sent to Tim and Wendy from current WCHA President Dave Baker, features Dave and his lovely wife
Scottie in period regalia. What a pleasant reminder of days gone past. Thanks Dave and Scottie!
Morning Paddle is a wonderful, limited edition, signed and numbered print from a
watercolor by Connie Smith. It's overall size is 21"x28". The image size is 16"x24". It
is available from the WCHA Merchandise page.
The Northwest Chapter of the WCHA met at North
Lake Samish, just outside Bellingham, Washington, in September 1995 for their
annual Canoe Meet. This wonderful photo of canoes in the fog was taken during one of
the early morning paddles, by
Susan Nielsen.
Andre G. Germain sent along this picture of the canoe "Sidartha" that he designed
and built in 1989. We post it here as an inspiration for your own canoe building
activities. Any questions should be sent to Andre at
agermain@freenet.npiec.on.ca.
Brian D. Lemee' of Pocasset, MA submitted this nice photo of a restored 1959 Old
Town, taken on Cape Cod.

Derrick Sheldon (pictured right) and his brother Owen, paddling on one of the many rivers near
Wilderness, on the south coast of South Africa - canoes built by Derrick. Derrick may be
reached through his friend Jean-Paul at brabo@iafrica.com.
The inimitable Hugh Clark poses with the figures he carved for the
1997 Assembly at Paul Smiths. In an unmatched, and much appreciated feat of volunteerism, Hugh completed over 100 Santa-To-The-Sea volunteer recognition gifts, over 130 small figures for sale in the Raffle & Auction, 6 large figures for sale in same, and over 700 canoe pins - all he donated to the organization or gave away to participants himself. This volunteer spent over 600 hours just in the carving required to make these exquisite figurines! Hugh also taught a number of wood burning and carving classes at the 1997 event, all of which were well attended and appreciated by the attendees. We love you Hugh!
