wooden boat/canoe?

It will probably take more than just a number like this to identify your boat / canoe. Can you provide any dimensions or pictures? An xx-yyy format was also used by Peterborough and White companies. The Old Town canoe with serial number 46277 is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Livery model with red Western cedar planking, closed spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between November, 1916 and June, 1917. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on June 28th, 1917 to Plattsburg, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your boat/canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Dear Benson,

Thank you for your reply. That is not the boat that I have. The boat in question is a car top model 12' boat interior cedar and the exterior is canvas. I have several pictures I can forward to you, but need to know how to do it? e-mail address?

The best approach is to attach them to a message here. See http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?469 for some more detailed instructions. My electronic mail address and other contact information is available at http://www.wcha.org/wcha-historian-network/ if all else fails. There were many companies that made boats like yours and serial number records are not available for most of them.

If there is a WX or WXH before the 46, it's a Penn Yan cartop boat. If not, It's likely a Shell Lake snipe. My best guess is a PY.

Thread drift

Thompson Take-A-Long is a 12' car topper type, too. I've seen hull numbers in the transom on some...

Dave, that's a sharp looking little boat.
Where did you get the decals? I need a set for my Thompson.
