Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hull number is 21560. It's 16 feet 3inches long has a keel 2 thwarts and diamond shaped hanger bolts for the seats has fairly high ends. There are pictures in my album. Who made it and when?

The Old Town canoe with serial number 21560 is a 16 foot long, AA (or top) grade, Charles River model with red Western cedar planking, open mahogany gunwales, mahogany decks, mahogany thwarts, mahogany seats, half ribs, open mahogany finish (outside) rails and a keel. It was built between March and May, 1912. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on May 22nd, 1912 to Lambertville, New Jersey. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. This is a bit early for diamond headed bolts so those may have been added in a later repair. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Very cool thanks... Once I get all the paint removed I can verify the mahagony. But the rest seems to match up. I found it in West Virginia not to far away from its original home.

Diamond head bolts weren't used until after 1920, and the deck cutout is not typical of a 1912 Old Town. Either the canoe has had these items changed, or the canoe is a Carleton, or there is a one in front of the serial number.

My guess is that these items were changed since the Carleton numbers stopped about a thousand short of this one and the Old Town with serial number 121560 is 17 feet long with sponsons and outside stems as shown below.
