I am a 25 yr WCHA member and working on a White Canoe with the following numbers on the bow stem band: 16 18 570. There is about 2 inches between the numbers as I tried to show. The canoe is 15'10" long with no seats and 5 thwarts. Brass plates both fore and aft. Any information on the "date of birth" would be helpful. Thanks so much.

Hi Gary. That sounds like a good one.
You should consider giving Rollin a call about that boat. He is about as expert on White's as they come. He's also in and out of this forum depending upon his schedule.

There are no known existing White serial number records available so no one here can give you any more details. The messages at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?8883 and http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?8824 have some information about similar canoes. There is a theory that during the late 1940s and early 1950s White put serial numbers in their canoes which had a two digit length followed by a two digit year and a seqential serial number. You may want to take a close look at the 18 in your number to see if it might be a 48 which could match this pattern.

Benson and Mike you have been very helpful. Benson you are right--a closer look and some baby powder revealed 48! So I can assume that the canoe was made in 1948 and we don't know anything about the 570. Thanks again.
