I have a Kennebec Canoe with the serial #16905. It is 17' long. The seats, thwots, decks, grating, rails, and keel are all mahogany. What can anyone tell me about it?
Thanks

The Kennebec Canoe Company placed serial number 16905 on two different Kennebec model canoes in 1922. The other one is an 18 foot long type 2a. My guess is that yours is the 17 foot type 3a with mahogany gunwales and outside stems. It was planked by Roy on November 18th, 1922. Tuttle then covered and first filled it on November 25th, 1922. Thibodeau applied the second filler coat on December 16th, 1922. Toulouse railed it on March 31st, 1923. The rest of the line is blank so it is not clear how it was finished, where it was shipped, or anything else. The original Kennebec records are stored at the Maine State Museum so I am unable to attach a scan of these records since their policies do not permit any electronic reproduction of their materials.

The microfilms of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join. More information about the Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection CD available from http://www.dragonflycanoe.com/cdrom.htm on the web.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
