Waterfall Canoe

Dave Wermuth

Who hid my paddle?
Can I get the scoop on this OT?
there was this fast water and then a capsize and then a waterfall and then a trip home in the trunk. It is in original, unrestored condition having gone over the falls shortly after purchase. The owner kept the pieces all these years. Sillicone and fiberglass have never been near this canoe. Other than that, it is in worse shape than it looks. I look forward to fixing it.

Thanks!

The Old Town canoe with serial number 176051 is an 16 foot long Guide's model with a keel. It was built between April and July, 1966. The original exterior paint color was G. S. (Guide's Special) green. It was shipped on July 7th, 1966 to Lathem, New York. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

These scans were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

You may need to start by building a strongback and simple form to align and hold everything together while you work. Have fun,

Benson

All I can think of--

All I can think of at this point is to disassemble the unbroken parts and use them on the pond hawk form. I don't have access to a 16' Guide form. I think the pond hawk has more rocker and is not as flat. I do not know that I can use a strongback to hold things together but it IS something to ponder. I could not claim it to be a retoration. I could, I suppose, claim it to be a canoe.

Dan M, What would the Pond Hawk form most resemble? A Pal?

Thanks.

Its a Canadian 44 which I believe is closest to the High-End Champlain, which is somewhat different than a Pal.
