I have what I think is an 18 ft square stern old town canoe. Serial number is 101996, would love any info on it. Its in pretty good shape but needs a little love to make it grand again. Also wondering what the value of it might be? Thank you.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 101996 is an 18 foot long, CS (common sense or middle) grade, square ended paddling model with red western cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, oak decks, half ribs, a keel, and an outside stem. It was built in June, 1929. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It shipped on August 17th, 1929 to Perry, Maine.

A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

Some good information about how to value and sell canoes is available at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 as Paul mentioned. You may find that canoes with a transom like this often sell for less than similar double ended ones. Please reply here if you have any other questions.
