Upper Saint John River

A couple of photos from our trip from Baker Lake to Dickey earlier this month.

Since there are no portages, the big twenty-foot freighter wasn't ever a burden. That's a 1947 Old Town Guide in Longs Rapids, piloted by a 1951 Maine Guide.

Tell us more about the trip! I checked my maps and this seems to be about an 80 mile trip with no portages! To a Boundary Waters traveler, that's incredible. I've been wanting to get up to Maine to do some canoeing and a no portage trip is pretty enticing. I could even use my 17 foot Prospector and not have to worry about toting it.

Andy -

Yup, it's a great canoe trip - when the flow is good. High water is too darn fast and low water is - pardon the pun - a drag. Your Prospector would be a real pleasure in the numerous rapids.

I've got a lot of info about the Saint John at www.mainecampsite.com
