Type of canoe????

    hrvoje Curious about Wooden Canoes

    I would like to know if somebody knows which type of canoe is this one, I only know that its made in Sweden before WWII, and now its in my possession for restoration? Thanks

    All I know is that its made of 3 shets of veneer, and its from Sweden, and now I would like to know more about it since its that old

    Yes, your canoe appears to be a cold-molded plywood canoe, similar to those built by companies like Haskell (a Michigan company) and Plycraft. Several of the companies that were building wood-canvas canoes added canoes like this to their catalogs, including Old Town and Penn Yan and some were sold through Sears. The era, as I recall, is the '30s to the '50s or so--- someone else may have more specific information. I've included links to three older discussions of molded plywood canoes, and as Rob suggests you can use the "search" function above to find more-- maybe find exactly what your canoe is.

    Here is a quote from the Wikipedia: "Cold-Molding is a composite method of wooden boat building that uses many different layers of thin wood, called veneers, oriented in all different directions, resulting in a strong monoque structure, similar to a fibreglass hull. Usually composed of a base layer of strip planking followed then by multiple veneers, cold-molding is becoming popular in very large, wooden superyachts."

    The first link includes an image from an Old Town catalog showing the construction of their molded canoe--- possibly the same method used in constructing yours.

    If it is from Sweden, it may well be a Max Andersson canoe.
    Paul Miller has one. He'll probably weigh in here soon!

    Actually, Old Town does not appear to have ever advertised molded plywood canoes in their catalogs. They did ship several "Weldwood" models and Penn Yan advertised a small boat with the same name as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=1439&d=1145117275 from a Penn Yan catalog.

    Struer from Denmark was another builder of molded plywood canoes in northern Europe as shown at http://www.struerkajak.com/Internat...tinued-models/Complete-list/STRUER-CANOE.aspx along with many racing canoes and kayaks in this style as shown at http://www.struerkajak.com/International-site/The-kayaks/Discontinued-models/Complete-list.aspx over the last sixty years.
