Two serial numbers?

I recently purchased Old Town CS 17' #52766. Upon close examination I found what appears to be another (serial?) number on the bow stem - #65578. I have also found a name "E Hack" stamped in two places, once on the center rib and again on the bow stem adjacent to the second number. Does anyone know what these additional markings mean? Is E Hack the maker? Thanks, Dave.

Hi Dave,

This is a puzzlement. E Hack was the owner of the later number: a 16' GS Grade (Guide Special) Charles River Model with open spruce gunwales, maple decks, thwarts and seat frames; half ribs and outside stems. It had a keel was painted gray and shipped to Mount Holly, NJ in 1921.

The scan of this record is attached below-- click on it to get a larger image. This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you and anyone else reading this will join or renew membership in the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Providing photographs would help with identification, as would an accurate measurement of the boat's
length.

The 52766 number is on the stern stem; the 65578 number is on the bow stem along with "E HACK". The center rib also has the "E HACK" stamped in. The canoe I have measures 16' 6" overall. Is it possible that I have the "E HACK" 16' #65578 canoe with a stem 'donated' from the #52766 (17') canoe when this canoe (the one I have) was restored by Jack LaPointe in ~ 2003-4?
