It appears that the interest in model or toy canoes goes back a long time as shown in the Hunt & Stowe advertisement below for “Toy canoes, etc.” They also featured a toy canoe in the postcard at http://forums.wcha.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=13521&d=1290816861 showing their store.
The images below are from the 1898 edition of the annual Bangor & Aroostook Railroad's magazine. This is where many early Maine canoe builders advertised as shown at http://forums.wcha.org/knowledgebase/Manufacturers:Old+Town+Canoe+Company for example. The 1898 issue also has the attached advertisements for Whitney canoes in Milo and L. M. Gerrish’s Hunting Camps in Norcross.
