Doh! We suspect that anyone working with wood can assimilate with this. A sculpture titled “Sometimes we get it right”. To be found at Kip Marina, Inverkip Scotland. Makes the occasional snapped new rib pale into insignificance.

Everyone loves a wooden canoe. This swan took more than a passing look at this 1911 Old Town Charles River on the Norfolk Broads in the UK. Having checked out the inside it then set about having a good peck at the #22 Paint pattern on the hull much to the amusement of Nick Dennis’s fellow paddlers!

Early morning reflections : Those in the know are aware that there are two 7 o’clocks in a day. Nick Dennis captured Sam Browning early one morning in his 1950’s Chestnut Playmate. It’s a wonderful time to enjoy the water and canoe; go on give it a go! #woodencanoeheritageassociation #chestnutcanoe #woodcanvascanoe

#22. Some examples of the iconic Old Town #22 Pattern. Attempting to get it correct will drive a person bonkers but the result is well worth it. Here it is gracing a 1911 OT Charles River, a reproduction of a 1908 BN Morris Model A, a 1966 OT Molitor and a 1944 OT Yankee. Photos courtesy of Tim Feathers, Ken Kelly, Northwood Canoe Company and Nick Dennis. It was reputed that the time consuming job of completing the pattern added 30% to the cost of the canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #northwoodscanoecompany #woodcanvascanoe #oldtowncanoes

"Worshiping our Wooden Canoe" WCHA UK members took their canoes to the Temple literally by paddling down the River Thames to Temple Island just downstream from Henley on Thames. An eclectric mix of canoes made the journey on a wonderful autumn day. You will spot a Peterborough Cedar Rib, a Chestnut Playmate, Old Town Charles River & OTCA models and a Thomas Gordon. ONE HUNDRED YEARS LATER…

Members Greg Nolan and Deborah Gardner were inspired to stage this photo, in the fall of 2013, by the image on an antique postcard taken from the exact same location one hundred years earlier. The site is on the Piscataquis River in Southern Maine, a way upstream from the town of Dover-Foxcroft. Their canoe is a 1922 Old Town Ideal model, 16 feet in length, AA grade, which has been beautifully restored by Ralph Nimtz of Wallingford, Vermont. . #wcha #canoe #canoetrip #adventuretime #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #piscataquisriver #doverfoxcroft

Autumn gives us the great opportunity to take some fantastic photographs of our canoes in great locations. Have a go and remember that you can submit your photos for consideration to be added to the fabulous WCHA Calendar. The 2022 copy can be purchased through the WCHA store; grab one or several before they are gone. They make great gifts for friends and family.

Autumn A poem for the season

Sing to me, Autumn, with the rustle of your leaves.
Breathe on me your spicy scents that flow within your breeze.

Dance with me, Autumn, your waltz that bends the boughs of trees.
Now tell me all the secrets you've whispered to the seas.

Sleep with me, Autumn, beneath your starlit skies.
Let your yellow harvest moon shimmer in our eyes.

Kiss me, Autumn, with your enchanting spellbound ways
That changes all you touch into crimson golden days.

Love me, Autumn, and behold this love so true
That I'll be waiting faithfully each year to be with you”.

The season of autumn is great for paddling. It’s return each year with its vibrant magical colors, warm bright days, the change from the heat of summer into cool but crystal clear sparkling nights, and the aroma of the woods and spice in the atmosphere. #chestnutcanoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation

THE ART OF THE CANOE BUILDER: In the late 1990’s, Jerry Stelmok took the lines off of a very early E.M. White form and created a limited series of canoes that reflect his lifelong interest in wildlife, art, and canoe building. His Millennium Sojourner Series pays homage to the period of transition from bark canoes to wood/canvas by the canoe’s pre- 1900 pedigree, and by using elements of the bark canoe such as spruce root lashings, decorated “winter bark” panels, and the shape of the thwarts. He paints each Sojourner with original wildlife scenes, has the seats woven in the style of far northern native snowshoes, and uses moose bone handles decorated with a scrimshaw style image. Millennium Sojourner #04 was built in 2003 for Bob Timberlake of Lexington, NC. #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #islandfallscanoe #atkinsonmaine

Unrepentant Canoeist
On the one hand, I say OUCH! On the other hand, if I'd wanted to build a pristine coffee table, I'd have done that... It's a canoe, and yes, they get dinged up... the true beauty is in their reparability.

Chestnuts. Two photos today. One is a collection of chestnuts and the other a collection of Chestnuts. Equally gorgeous. SNOW IN PENNSYLVANIA: Member Zark Markovich got this beautiful shot as he paddled down Tohickon Creek in Bucks County. An early snowfall blended with the fall foliage and sparkling water to create a memorable day and a wonderful photograph. The canoe is a 1937 Old Town OTCA model, #123657, restored by Zark, who notes that all of the wood is original except the coamings. #wcha #canoe #woodencanoeheritageassociation #woodencanoe #tohickoncreek #buckscounty

Setting The Paddle.
Lude Kraak from the Netherlands demonstrates technique for freestyle canoeing at a Quiet Water Symposium. A wood canvas canoe built by Lude under the guidance of Thomas Braun in Germany. This was at an event held on the Thames in the UK but for those wishing more involvement in learning both “freestyle “ and “Canadian.” Style paddling a trip to the Kringlefieber event in Germany is well worth it.

A photo can tell several stories. Here the 1890 E M White canoe “Sioux” owned and paddled by the late David Houghton is the WCHA show stopper. Behind is the historic Houghton Mill which dates from the 17th Century. Hanging on to the water wheel is Dave Myers of the Hairy Biker duo who were aiding and filming repairs to the mill for a program about Britains industrial heritage #woodencanoeheritageassociation #houghtonmill #hairybikers
