    pbigos Curious about Wooden Canoes

    Good afternoon,

I have Serial # 171723 13' Old Town something. Originally a canvas covered wood canoe. Would have been blue underbody with white above rub rail. 1/2" Gold Stripe with Leaf ends. My dad's old boat.

Would anybody have a good digital picture of the leaf ends so I can recreate this detail? Any such thing as a pattern available.

Attached is a picture of my project. Basically done. White paint is still a little tacky. :)

Although I put the heading of Serial Number Seach, I forgot to ask for one in the body of the post. If anybody has any information on this canoe serial number 171723, that would be great.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 171723 is a 13 foot long fifty pound model with a keel and rub rails. It was built between January and March, 1962. The original exterior paint color was probably similar to the image at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/designs/design45.gif and known as design number 45. It shipped on March 20th, 1962 to Manchester, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

A copy of the original pattern for the oak leaf may still be available from the factory. I have a canoe with an original design 45 in my garage so I can send you a high resolution digital image if you want to work with that.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

If you could shoot a digital shot of a real Design 45 to pgb@maine.rr.com, that would be great. If possible a measuring tape extended maybe above the rubrail, would be a great reference.

    Thank you,
