I have an Old Town that has been passed down in my family for many years. I believe it was built in the 1965 but am not certain. The S/N is 194060 15. Any information on this would be most helpful.

Welcome and congratulations, I hate to dispute family lore but the Old Town canoe with the serial number 194060 is a 15 foot long Trapper model with a keel that was built between March and November, 1973. The original fiberglass exterior was left clear to show the natural wood. It shipped on January 31st, 1974 to Crystal Bay, Minnesota. The back side of the record indicates that the trucking company was unable to deliver it so it returned for credit on February 20th, 1974. It was then shipped to Monroe, Connecticut on April 26th, 1974. Scans showing both sides of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will contribute, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Canoes with a family history are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thank you for the information. I knew that we were not the original owners of the canoe. When my family got the canoe it had been damaged and we had it repaired. Before I knew of the canoe, it had gone from Conn to CA to NY. I have been the caretaker of the canoe for 25 years but did have much / any real history before 1978. While this is a heavy canoe, now 63#, it has been a great canoe that I have used on Lake Erie, the Finger Lakes and even on the St. Lawrence River which in heavy waves was a challenge to say the least.

In the attached photo the canoe is sitting on a bed of weed, not actually the rocks.
