Sanding filler

Ed Blakeslee

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have finished filling the canvas and it needs some sanding before paint. It's been on about three weeks( Old Town Filler). My question is can you sand too far? I know if you go through the canvas you have a problem. Should I use a wet 220 paper? I'm lloking for a little direction. Thanks Ed

AS far as i can tell, and it's new to me,too, filler should not be sanded too much after applying. What you want to do is apply a coat of paint on top of the filler, then sand, and apply another coat of paint, repeat process two or three more times. I am at the same stage as you, I just applied filler for my first time. It (the final coat of filler) :p is a little rough, but I am not going to sand until after the first coat of paint. I am going to use Kirby's #21, deep red, and plan on using at least 3 coats. sanding in between. Any thoughts or comments?
