You can also try these guys for butternut, though I’m not sure if they do mail order. http://www.vermontwildwoods.com/lumber.html

Google Chestnut lumber and you will get plenty of sellers of reclaimed material.

Elm would be a good a substitute, especially English Elm.

I would stay away from sycamore unless you’re getting it from someone like Talarico hardwoods, http://www.talaricohardwoods.com/ but be ready to shell out some $$.

All good suggestions, Dylan, but since Andy is in the UK, mail order is a little harder. Especially with the latest amendment to the Lacy Act screwing everything up so badly...

Andy, did your canoe have floor boards? Check your ribs for small screw holes which held the brass floor board clips. The floorboards were usually Bass wood which was sometimes stained Walnut. I have emailed the pictures to you.

Yes, I saw his UK location. Last I knew Berkshire, Hearne, and Talarico sell world wide. All three have built their 20-30 year reputations selling lumber sight unseen so I would trust them. Contact them and find out what you need to do to purchase from them. You might want to ask them if they know of a retailer in the UK. Chances are B,H, or T are suppliers of some sort (or have been in the past) to retailers in the UK.

Thanks again to all. I have looked at the websites and there is a possibility of supply, I will contact them after Christmas. I am now preparing the stem for bending and will let you know how it progresses. The hull is cleaning up well and is in excellent condition. I have traced some butternut in the UK that I may be able to use for the decks but am having trouble tracing some white cedar, I will need about 6 ft of strip and it can be in short lengths, I just need to tidy up around the decks as there is damage from the earlier repair. Is there anyone out there could send me some? Thanks to everyone who has sent me pictures I now know how the boat should look.

Does anyone have any information on sailing rigs that may have been used on this age of craft and why is the seat so far back, it certainly would not paddle well in this position.

Dave I have checked and there are screw holes for floorboards. What would the brackets look like and how thick are the boards?

Andy, Keep in mind that there were different methods of securing floorboards. Some had clips that held around the edge and some just had screws thru
the floorboard. You will be able to tell by the location of the screw holes.
I have had two canoes that had the thru the board screws.
