Curious about Wooden Canoes
I have an old wood/canvas canoe that was bought by my grandfather around 1922. I was told it was an Old Town. It is 18 feet long and in fairly good shape and I believe "seaworthy". I was hoping to find more information on this canoe and what it is going to take to restore it to "new" condition.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 65045 is an 18 foot long, CS grade, Charles River model with open spruce gunwales, birch decks, birch trim, and a keel. It was built between February and April, 1921. The original exterior paint color was dark red. It shipped on June 4th, 1921 to Louisville, Kentucky. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.html to join.

You will find a great deal of good information in these forums about restoring canoes. The WCHA bookstore at http://virtualbooks.wcha.org/ has several books on restoring. "The Wood and Canvas Canoe: A Complete Guide to Its History, Construction, Restoration, and Maintenance" by Jerry Stelmok and Rollin Thurlow is a great place to start.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Thanks. This information is consistant with what was passed on to me by my uncle. My grandfather documented, in photographs, his numerous canoe trips on the Ohio River between Louisville and Cincinnati during the 1920's. My plan is to restore his old Charles River model to "new" condition. Stripping begins next week.
