Curious about Wooden Canoes
Hey, I just picked up a Double Ender with the serial number 139734.

If that number doesn't seem right I can climb into my truck and take a second look.

The Old Town with serial number 139734 is a 16 foot long HW so that isn't a good match for a double ended row boat. Please post some pictures of the serial numbers from both ends.

Oops, there was a typographical error in my previous message (which I just corrected). The Old Town with serial number 139734 is a 16 foot long HW so that isn't a good match for a double ended row boat. Sorry about that,

Benson

It could possibly be 139714 almost looks like an over-stamp on the second to last digit. It might be wrong but the last digit looks more like a 4 in person than in thr picture.

Ill get my wife to help me take it off the truck after lunch and I can get a closer look at the other stem.

My guess is that you may have the Old Town with serial number 139737. This is a 16 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, double ended boat model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, a floor rack, and a bob stay. It was built between April and June, 1944. The original exterior color was dark green. It shipped to Ashland, New Hampshire on July 21st, 1944. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match. See https://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/17826/ for a similar record. Does this boat have outside stems? The record for number 139736 is another double ended boat which has them. Can you get a picture of the serial number from the other end? Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

That all adds up. I knew it was a Rockywold boat but the previous owner thought it was from the 30s. Doesn't really matter to me either way.

I'll try to take a look at the other end, I'll need to take the seat out to do it.

Yes it does have outside stems.

Well the last two digits on that end are obliterated. In person I can still only see a 4 at the end but the last two digits both look stamped over to me. There is a "34" number tack on the deck, I assume that meant # 34 of their fleet, or maybe cabin # 34? It makes me wonder if the camp for some reason stamped over the last two numbers to match their own numbering scheme.

Your build sheet makes sense though.

After a little digging it seems like the tacks are steel instead of brass.
