Curious about Wooden Canoes
I was visiting a client this morning who has an 11' OT in the barn. His dad picked it up used in the 50's is what he says. I told him I would look up the serial number and give him some details. He might be looking to part with it...as if I need another project boat.

What are the details on this one?

The Old Town canoe with serial number 134860 is an 11 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, fifty pound model with open spruce gunwales, ash decks, ash thwarts, ash seats, a keel, and a floor rack. It was built between February and April, 1942. The original exterior paint color was fire red. It shipped on April 29th, 1942 to Hillsboro, New Hampshire. A scan of this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to donate or renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
