LOVES Wooden Canoes
Can I get a history for this canoe please? Thank you :)

OT 11259 17

Also, if anyone is feeling extra amazing. have a partial _ _ _ 737 which is thought to be a guides (possibly guides special) from the 1920-30 era.

The Old Town canoe with serial number 11259 is a 17 foot, AA (or top) grade, HW (Heavy Water) model with red Western Cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, a keel, a floor rack, carry yoke, and a six foot long spruce paddle. It was built between May and June, 1909. It was an "extra light" construction which originally weighed 67 pounds. The exterior paint color was golden tan. It shipped on June 29th, 1909 to Monmouth, Maine. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the thumbnail image attached below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/ot_records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/join.php to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. I'd hate to discourage anyone from restoring an old canoe but Steve Vorpagel of the WCHA looked at this canoe a few months ago and said "Canoe 11259-17 needed about everything, stems, decks, ribs, and so on. We can’t save them all." Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,

Thanks for the scan and especially the additional information. Do you know if the other two canoes this seller has were also examined. One is a sponsoned canoe...possibly 16 foot...and the other is an 18 foot canoe which I am assuming is a guides canoe, but the seller does not know the serial number. Would appreciate any info. Have a good evening.

Steve also asked about serial number 21737 at the same time which is 18 feet long as shown below but he hasn't asked about one with sponsons. The canoes in the xxx737 format between 100737 and 109737 do not show any Guide models. I will send you Steve's address in a private message if you want to discuss these with him further.
