Old Town Serial Number

Brly

Enthusiastic about Wooden Canoes
I would love to have the build sheet for SN 160303-18. Should be an Otca.
Thanks in advance!
Ben

Welcome, the Old Town canoe with serial number 160303 is an 18 foot long, CS (Common Sense or middle) grade, Otca model with a keel. It was built between June and August, 1953. The original exterior paint color was dark green. It was shipped on July 15th, 1954 to Scranton, Penna. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand others were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Benson,

Thank you very much! My Dad picked this canoe up for me yesterday, so I haven't seen it in person. It seems pretty safe to assume the gunwales are spruce. From what I've read, the decks, seat frames and thwarts could be spruce, ash, birch or oak. Is that correct? Would the keel likely be spruce as well? It's deteriorated and will need to be replaced.
Thanks again,
Ben

The gunwales are most likely to be spruce while the decks, seat frames, thwarts, and keel are most likely to be hard wood (ash, birch, maple, or oak). Good luck with the restoration,

Benson

Understood. I really appreciate the information.
Regards,
Ben
