Hello folks, I'm helping someone identify the hull material of a 17ft Old Town canoe that's been in the family for decades. Can anyone give me some information on Serial # 194335 ? Thanks and much appreciated!

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 194335 is an 18 foot long Chipewyan model that weighed 77 pounds. It was built between March and April, 1973. The original exterior color was dark green. It shipped on May 3rd, 1973 to Newbury, Massachusetts. A scan showing this build record can be found below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join, or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See https://www.woodencanoe.org/about to learn more about the WCHA and https://www.woodencanoe.org/shop to donate or join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. It is built from an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) plastic. This is the generic name for Royalex which is Uniroyal's trade name. Old Town called their version Oltonar since it was slightly different from Royalex. Canoes with a family connection are always extra special. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
