Canoe nut
Picked up a nice canoe today, zero rot on the gunwales and decks - they only need light sanding and oiling.

Any chance it has a build sheet, I'm wondering if the sailing set up (seat and rudder mount only) are original.

Thanks,
Russ

The Old Town canoe with serial number 221419 and hull identification number XTC21419M79E is a 17 foot long, Chipewyan Ranger model with wooden rails, cane seats, a mast seat and step. It was built between May and October, 1978. The original exterior vinyl color was green. It shipped on December 27th, 1978 to Wareham, Massachusetts. The back side of the scan indicates that it had moved to Claymont, Delaware after it was purchased on September 25th, 1978. (This appears to be a typographical error since it was still in the factory at that time.) Scans showing both sides this build record can be found below.

These scans and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to renew.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

I repaired an EM White once - probably Royalex - that had those brass caps on the ends.

Benson, thank you...have started sanding the wood, can't believe how great the condition is on this boat.
Someone will love it when I'm done rehabbing it.

Fitz,
I've seen 2 Old Town Campers with slightly different brass caps - sent one set to Greg Nolan so that he could convert his Camper to wood gunwales.
I have 2 sets of caps, one set of each style in stock...picked them up from someone a month ago.
