I was wondering if anyone could assist me in finding the build record on my great-grandfather's canoe? Its an Old Town with a serial # of 27944 17. Some time ago the exterior was painted red, but the inside of the canoe is still in great condition.

    Many thanks,

The Old Town canoe with serial number 27944 is an 17 foot long, CS grade, Otca model with western red cedar planking, open spruce gunwales, maple decks, maple trim, and a keel. It was built between July, 1913 and February, 1914. The original exterior paint color was bright red. It shipped on February 27th, 1914 to Toledo, Ohio. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan was created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others as you probably know well. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at if you want more details. I hope that you will renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See to learn more about the WCHA.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description don't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
