The Old Town canoe with serial number 183038 is a 17 foot long Otca model with half ribs, rub rails, a keel, outside stems, a floor rack, a stern seat set at 32 inches, a stem band along the full length of the keel, a painter ring, and sailing equipment. It was built between April, 1969 and July, 1970. The original exterior paint was black. It shipped on July 28th, 1970 to Detroit, Michigan. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.
This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
It's currently black with a dark red above the waterline rub rail. Hard to see in the pictures. It was advertised as a 1940 canoe, but the price seems good regardless. Haven't seen it up close, but it appears to be in good original condition. Asking price is $1795. I don't know canoe values, but that's a deal, right?
This canoe is highly customized so the black was probably a customer request. A $1795 asking price could be reasonable if it is in very good shape. See the information at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/57/ and http://www.wcha.org/classifieds for more ideas about how to value a canoe like this. Good luck,
