I have a cedar and canvas Old Town with serial #119559. Any idea how old it could be? I called OT years ago, and I think I renumber them telling me it was made in 1905.

Welcome and congratulations, the Old Town canoe with serial number 119559 is an 18 foot long, GS (guide's special or utility) grade, guide model with open spruce gunwales, oak decks, oak thwarts, oak seats, a keel, a bob stay, and bilge keels. It was built between November, 1936 and April, 1937. The original exterior paint color was guide's special green. It shipped to South Casco, Maine on June 25th. 1937. A scan showing this build record can be found by following the link at the attached thumbnail image below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

Bob stay??? What would a bob stay be on a canoe?

A bob stay on a canoe is a special painter ring mounted low on the stem for towing. See https://images.craigslist.org/00505_kjMGoiY4oVg_1200x900.jpg and https://images.craigslist.org/00t0t_cXLt2SLs1RF_1200x900.jpg for the one on this canoe. The camp where this canoe was shipped is known for an annual 'tow' as shown at
from 2017 and in the period image below. Let me know if this doesn't answer your question.
