Hi all
Any info on my newly required Old Town would be greatly appreciated.
172734 16
thanks Mitch

Welcome, the Old Town with serial number 172734 is a 16 foot long Guide model with a keel. It was built between December, 1962 and February, 1963. The original exterior color was G. S. (guide's special) green. It shipped on March 29th, 1963 to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A scan of this build record can be found by following the link behind the thumbnail image attached below.

This scan and several hundred thousand more were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) and others. A description of the project to preserve these records is available at http://www.wcha.org/catalogs/old-town/records/ if you want more details. I hope that you will donate to, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-wcha to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions. Congratulations on your recent acquisition,

Benson

I've seen more than a few Old Town canoes from Ruggles Marine in the early '60s. They must have been a pretty active dealer at one time

A quick search of the scanned records for Ruggles finds 116 ranging from number 118487 in 1937 to number 190037 in 1972. That does make them a very active dealer in the area. A similar search for a big dealer in the Boston area named Fernald's comes up with 1662 records from 1953 to 1981 but these were mostly plastic canoes. The messages at http://www.wcha.org/forums/index.php?threads/5559/ have some more information on this topic. Fun stuff,

Benson

Thank you for the info!
Looks like I'm the new owner of a 62' Christmas Canoe , makes perfect sense than she was green...
After the restoration maybe I will christen her Holly :)
