North Maine Woods

Wooden Canoes are in the Blood
In Memoriam
We got back a week or so ago from the annual camping expedition to the North Maine Woods. I go with my family and a buddy's family. We have been friends since he pulled up at my place on his bike in 2nd grade.

Anyway, this year's expedition was in the far North Maine Woods. I could give you the locale, but I would have to shoot you. In Abnaki, the location means, "where there is a large lake and a river". Good luck with that description in Maine! Seriously, if you need to know, email and I will divulge the location. An astute person may be able to triangulate and come up with it on their own.

Here is the shelter at the campsite. Rumor has it that Ted Nugent himself slept here...

Well, the bestest thing about the summer trip is that we vehicle camp and don't have to worry about portaging and the like, so we end up hauling in a lot of cooking gear and lots of food. Nothing like Maine Blueberry Flapjacks done on the cast iron...

The Beach Crowds were just Nuts!! Here we have about a 1.5 mile long beach and a couple of "tourists":

One never knows what he may find in the North Maine Woods. How about an abandoned, paved 1/2 mile airstrip! This feature was installed to combat the Spruce Budworm Infestation of the late 1970's or so.

Of course, you can't go to new country without getting a good look around!

Another great trip. As long as you keep Grandma in the fish, it promises to be a great time!!

I hate to admit it, but I dumped my sailing canoe for the first time. Of course, I did it during lunch time on a remote Maine Lake, so no one came to my rescue. I lost my bailer and some of my gear and then spent half an hour or more coaxing the canoe and rig to shore...

But it is all still good.

Fitz.
