Curious about Wooden Canoes
All:

I recently (OK, today) picked this old canoe up from a person who stated that he got it 10 - 15 years ago at a gas station near Rice Lake.
Can anyone help me identify it? Anyone else interested in coaching me on its restoration?
Length 15' 7"
Width at gunnels 34 1/2"
Width excluding gunnels 30 1/2"

The brass plate says A. E. ? and Peterborough, Ont.

Your canoe was built by A. E. Barrie. He was a canoe builder at the Canadian Canoe Co between 1905 and 1928. In 1928 he started his own canoe building shop .

Thanks. Is there anyplace I can look to get additional information? I can find no numbers on the craft. Did he have different models?

From what I have been able to piece together A.E. Barrie built Wide-board Rib & Batten, Cedar-strip as well as Wood canvas canoes in lengths of 13’, 15’ and 16’. Most of his production was cedar-strip canoes.

Alaomega, where are you located? Local chapters have lots of folks with experience they'd be happy to share.
