The Kennebec canoe with serial number 2508 is an 18 foot long canoe shown on pages 292 and 293 of volume one in the Kennebec ledgers. It has spruce rails, cedar stems, red western cedar planking, and was planked by Bechard on September 27th, 1913. The decks are 15-M (15 inch maple?) and the canvas is 58-10 (58 inch number 10). The canvas covering was applied by Roy on October 4th, 1913. Smith added the first filler coat on the same day. Roy the second coat. The keel and braces (thwarts)were "a" (ash?). The seats were "M" (maple?). W. Poirier railed it. The original color was medium green and this was applied by Hanson in March of 1915. It shipped to W. A. Abel Co on March 10th, 1915. The scans of these build records can be found below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). A description of the project to preserve other records like these is available at if you want more details. I hope that you will donate, join or renew your membership to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See to learn more about the WCHA and to donate or join.

More information about this and other Kennebec models can be found in the Kennebec catalogs contained on the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection available from in the WCHA store.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match the canoe. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.

    Thank You Benson,
That is the canoe I have. When I first brought this canoe home, I read the serial# Tag as 2608. And requested a build record on it.
The only thing you could tell me was that it was listed as a 1915 canoe. There wasn't any other info recorded.
When I finished my rebuild I had planned to post everything I knew about it to fill in the blanks.
I was cleaning the I.D. tag to reinstall if after finishing the canoe. When I saw what I thought was a six was really a poorly stamped five. I requested info on Kennebec canoe 2508 and this time the blanks were already all filled in.
Thanks again and yes M= maple and A=ash.
