Lakefield 2-98 16

Michael,

Thanks for that link to that old thread. I knew most of that history but hadn't seen all the details laid out quite like that before.
I have an old Richardson that is in longterm restoration for sentimental reasons- my inlaws first new canoe for the cottage purchased 1965- and really appreciate the lineage.

In related vein, i have recently relocated to Peterborough, working for Ontario Ministry of Natural resources. Our offices are built on the site of the old Peterborough Canoe Company on the Otonabee River and there is a Peterborough (or Lakefield) cedar strip hanging above the main entrance. I haven't been able to convince security to allow me to crawl up there and examine the markings yet...

My canoe was given to me by my Grandfather around 1967. It was given to him by a Lake Rosseau cottager. I don't think my Grandfather paddled so not sure how long it hung in an old boathouse until he took it down to give to me. It was so dry and leaked badly. We'd soak it every year (and still do lots of bailing) as I learned to paddle. Used it in many Rosseau Regattas in the 70's& 80's.

I had my canoe restored around 1990. Pam at Bearwood Canoes did an amazing job replacing the stem band, now deck, stripping, patching and lots of varnish. Had it touched up gain around 2005 and floorboards added. Then 4 years ago a large branch fell on it... actually putting a hole. Back to Bearwood and again Pam did amazing repair. Also added a seat. I will try to post pictures.

The plates say Lakefield Canoe Co. Lakefield, Ontario.
It is 16' and approx 3' wide.
The bow deck used to have a hole for a sail mast. The 'holder ring' for the mast is still in bottom of canoe.
