Lacquer thinner as stripper?

Curious about Wooden Canoes
I didn't strip as thoroughly as I could have. When I put some shellac on, (mixed with alcohol and lacquer thinner) the small bits of remaining varnish gelled up just like they did with the stripper I used (which wasn't great)....so I was wondering if next time I could just use laquer thinner and skip the stripper?

It worked really fast...like in 2 minutes. maybe you wouldn't need to. Could be that the layer of varnish that was left was really thin...and had been sanded so it must have had scratches in it to increase the surface area. Maybe lacquer thinner would work as an alternative for touching up areas that the stripper didn't get successfully.
