Fiberglass will need to be removed. Seats appear to be maple. Keel is original, but I'm not quite sure if it had outside stems at one point.

Congratulations, the Kennebec canoe with number 18373 is a 16 foot long Kennnebec model type A as shown on page 116 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Cameron on June 6th, 1925. The canvas covering and first filler coat were applied by Tuttle on June 27th, 1925. The second filler coat was applied by Thibodeau on July 25th, 1925. The rails were installed by Mansell on August 1st, 1925. The original color was "Special" so please let us know if you see any shadows of a fancy design under the current green paint. It shipped to location 26-113 on February 24th, 1926. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it. Scans showing both pages of this build record can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below.

These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum. The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA) as you probably know well. I hope that you will join or contribute to the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://www.wcha.org/store/membership to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. More information about Kennebec is available at http://www.wcha.org/store/historic-wood-canoe-and-boat-company-catalog-collection in the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions.
