Hi, I have recently inherited a canoe built by kennebec and was wondering the year in which is was built and its value? The number on it is 16935. Thank you wayne:)

The Kennebec canoe with number 16935 is an 18 foot long Kennnebec model type 3A with mahogany rails and outside stems as shown on page 213 of volume three in the Kennebec ledgers. It was planked by Roundy on November 25th, 1922. The canvas covering was applied by Tuttle on December 16th, 1922. The first filler coat was applied by Grant on December 16th, 1922. The second filler coat was applied by Thibodeau on December 30th, 1922. It was railed by Toulouse on April 7th, 1923. The original color was medium green(?) with a half inch gold stripe. It shipped on April, 13th 1923 to location 23-137. This location is probably an order number but we don't currently have enough information to identify it.

The scans of these build records can be found by following the links at the attached thumbnail images below. These original Kennebec records are reproduced through the courtesy of the Maine State Museum.

The microfilms and scans of these records were created with substantial grants from the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association (WCHA). I hope that you will join the WCHA so that services like this can continue. See http://www.wcha.org/about-the-wcha/ to learn more about the WCHA and http://store.wcha.org/WCHA-New-Membership.html to join.

It is also possible that you could have another number or manufacturer if this description doesn't match your canoe. The page at http://forums.wcha.org/showthread.php?57 has a good summary of how to value an old canoe like yours. More information about Kennebec is available at http://store.wcha.org/The-Historic-...pany-Catalog-Collection-Version-2-CD-ROM.html in the Historic Wood Canoe and Boat Company Catalog Collection. Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions,

Benson

Wow, that was quick! Thank you so much. This is very helpful.
I will certainly consider joining WCHA if I am able to buy this canoe.
